Ooops. I never thought you did mate. I wholeheartedly agree with you about the professional status of engineers in the UK as well. My academic qualifications are split between two disciplines, education and engineering. I hold IEng. status myself and it seems to count for nothing. |

We usually have a grumble to ourselves round here when the photocopier is broken and someone sticks on a post-it 'Engineer Called!'
What for? To design and develop a better copier that doesn't break? I don't mean to belittle the job that the technicians that fix machines do, in fact most days I'd rather do that (that's why I have a 75 to fix). Thing is, it's not worth getting worked up about. Engineering isn't seen as a profession, like in other countries, and unfortunatley it will never be. |

As well as the lack of real engineering activity in this country these days, the terms 'Engineer' and 'Engineering' have simply been devalued by the seemingly insatiable desire for ever grander and grander sounding job titles over and above what certain positions warrant.
Examples that spring to mind are (and I'm not belittling any of the jobs' mentioned): Sales car EXECUTIVE - still a salesman Environmental Cleansing Operative - Road Sweeper Replenishment Operatives (actually saw this advertised in the local Homebase store) - shelf stackers. For what it's worth I'm going to do the masters course in my spare time while working. The module descriptions sound like they will involve more specialist application of knowledge rather than ploughing on with more damned theory I think I will do the eight modules over two years (it's flexible within reason & within a fixed time limit) and then spend a full year on the 'gert' big project.
First up: more Pro/E and one other module. I wish I'd kept dabbling at Pro/E now instead of moving on after learning some of it. D'oh! |
