Why not go to Blackpool ? it is very family friendly, nice hotels and restaurants, lots for the kids to do. It even has an Eiffelesque tower to go up. And your carbon footprint to get there would be very, very small !

If you want a great place to go to, try Porto, or Northern Portugal. It's still nice and raw and un-comercialised still...!

And it is very family friendly...... And reasonably cheap! Like in Porto you can still get a hotel, in the centre of town with breakfast included for Euro35 per night for 2 people! http://www.residencialescondidinho.com.pt/?section=home Actually when my wife stayed there a few weeks ago she only paid Euro25 per night for her and our daughter!!!

I've also stayed here: www.vilachaterrace.com Lovely place near Porto, but you will need a car...

Anyway, that's my suggestion. Good luck!

Not only that, my wife was born there and all her family live there.....So, I love it!

Not quite within your criteria, but Agadir in Morocco is nice (as is Marrakech). Family oriented culture, and off the lout trail

We have fell for Portugal also, 3rd visit coming up, we fly Saturday its also very cheap

If you want something different, and fancy having a drive, would highly recommend this site > http://www.landal.com/ my kids loved it, we went to Belgium, did kayaking, swimming in the lake, walking, cycling etc but if a hot beach is your thing, then prob not for you.
