David Jason was up for the role as Jones, but was piped to the post by Clive Dunn (both characture actors) who had pulled out of a play to take the part.
Jim Broadbent (Inspector Slater etc) was up for the role as Del Boy but pulled out for a play and David Jason stepped into the part. And all came on to be successfull.
