Auto trans oil cooler fan (1.8T)
Has anyone ever changed the fan on theirs?
I bought a new fan and oil temp sensor (Chinese parts) for the cooler a while back. However, the face of the fan blades appear to be mounted the opposite way round to the OEM version (see images attached). Presumably, the fan spins in the opposite direction to provide the equivalent cooling effect? I also bought a Chinese trans cooler rad but it's for in front of the left front wheel arch (not the right, as on 1.8Ts over here). The pipe openings are also orientated differently, so can't see this being any good to me. So, a few questions for anyone that might know.. 1: Do the fan blades on the Chinese MG fans (for 1.8T auto oil cooler) spin the opposite direction to the OEM variants? 2: I need to change the plugs on the Chinese auto oil rad temp sensor (different size to OEM). The cords on the Chinese version are blue and black, but they're both predominantly black on the car-side loom (with a narrow strip of purple to one of the wires) - does the one with the purple stripe pair up to the blue or the black lead on the Chinese fan? 3: What are the chances of getting pipes (x2) made up to lead from the auto transmission on the near-side of the engine to the auto oil cooler rad that sits in front of the off-side wheel arch? The OEM pipes have swaged ends to fit the rad and are probably difficult to replicate exactly? (OEM aren't available anymore). Cheers, Karl. |

I'm revisiting the auto box oil cooler fan on my 1.8T.
Had a chance today to check the fan rotation on both the old and the new fan (see image attached): - Both spin in the anti-clockwise direction when looked at from the rear (as in the photo) - this is assuming that the black wire is negative and the blue wire is positive, which is the OEM set-up. Now, the problem I have is that the blades of the fan are oriented differently on the Chinese (new) version. The OEM fan when spinning anti-clockwise draws air away from the radiator and towards the rear of the vehicle (which is correct - keeps the air circulation working one way). However, the Chinese version when spinning anti-clockwise would draw air from the wheel arch and push it into the rear of the rad - which is not correct, to my mind. The rotation of the fan can be reversed by switching the polarity of the blue and black cables (not a big problem as I have to cut the plug off the old fan anyway - to fit the car loom). Question is - would doing this cause any ECU issues (or is it as simple as it sounds?). This is all very strange to me - I'm assuming that the MG7 auto box oil cooler set-up faces the same direction as the 75 version, albeit in front of the near-side wheel arch (rather than the off-side, as over here). Quite possibly, alright The only thing is is that I'd hate to put it back together "wrong", when I've actually went to the trouble of changing it It's very rare that this fan comes on anyway, but if it works as dramatically at cooling as the standard coolant rad fan does, I wouldn't want it operating incorrectly (I'm a paranoid K series owner, remember ). UBI000010 is the temp sensor on the auto trans oil cooler rad.
Have a new MG version to fit, but it has one blue and one black wire to the plug - the car-side loom has one black cable and one black with purple stripe cable. I need to change the plug over from the old sensor to fit the car-side loom. But, does anyone know if the blue attaches to the purple striped cable or the black? Or, does it even matter once the circuit is completed? (apologies, to say that I'm mechanically/electrically naive would be to praise me!). (first image is the plug on the MG/Chinese temp sensor / second image is the car-side loom and plug). Cheers, Karl. |

Its a switch so only on off. It won't matter which way round you wire it.
