Default Fuel pump diagnosis, 2002 cdt

Hi all,

As always grateful for any wisdom that you can share.

2002 cdt that I picked up as a stop gap in Feb and rather like, so I'm working through a list of jobs both sorting faults and also peace of mind type jobs as it is currently our main (but not only) car.

The car is running just fine and whilst not the quietest at idle etc has no issues apparent to me except I think the UBP may be a bit noisy...... a sort of humming noise. Putting my head under the bonnet it is less obvious, and I can only really hear a sewing machine like ticking noise. Definitely nothing from the fbh area.

I read on here that a noisy ubp is often the sign of a failed itp, so have tried listening through the filler cap (the tank was full) and I think I can hear a faint hum, but wasn't sure if it was the ubp noise resonating.

Last week the tank was very nearly empty with the amber low fuel warning light on and the car still running fine, is that a definitive sign that the itp is working?

How loud should the ubp be from within the car, both when priming and running?

I've ordered a new fuel filter as I realised I forgot to do that as part of the service, in case that is at all restrictive. Anything else to check?

Given the relatively low cost of a pump (£65 for a german made one from dmgrs) I'm tempted to do the ubp as a precaution, but am interested in your opinions pls?

Sorry phone malfunction. I was posting, check if original pump, if it is and starts without issue leave it alone. By all means get one as a spare to have on shelf but is you do swap it the new ones tend to make more noise than original

If you had it down to the low level light coming on then, as long as nobody has played with the plumbing in the tank, the ITP should be fine.

Try unplugging the UBP and listening with the filler cap removed - the fuel pumps will run for between 30 seconds to a minute with key to position II, depending on the ECM fitted.

To close the loop on this thread, I disconnectet the ubp and then could hear the itp with the key in position 2 and the fuel cap off; good!

I then changed the fuel filter with a genuine one from DGMRS and hey presto! Nice quiet ubp again. I don't know when it was last done as we only got the car in Feb and don't have the recent SH. So maybe the old one was a bit clogged up and causing the pump to work hard.

As ever, thank you all for your replies. A good and cheap outcome!

Glad you got it sorted!
A blocked fuel filter will create quite a lot of pressure for the UBP to fight against, and thus could render it rather noisy.

A happy outcome indeed.
