Default Help required with Electrical Gremlins

HI there

I have a 2002 75 V6 2000cc Connoisseur Automatic Saloon with several electrical gremlins that all manifested at pretty much the same time. The car runs and drives perfectly with no other problems.

I will list the problems below and if anyone can help confirm whether they are related or not it would really help as the garage seem to think it needs a complete dash replacement.

Indicators/hazards work perfectly external but don't flash on the dash

Main beam works fine doesn't show as blue high beam light on the dash same with the front and rear fog lights

Central locking unlocks with the blip but won't lock, works perfectly off the internal switch. The external key lock in the drivers door unlocks everything but again wont relock everything

The stereo head unit backlights when the head/sidelights are switched on but the unit wont switch on, the in dash auto changer and sat nav disc reader in the boot still have power and work as they should ie disc loading ejecting etc.

When running the ventilation from the dash control panel and ECON is selected it shows the selected temperatures however once ECON is switched over to full A/C the temperature displays change to Er but the climate control works perfectly coming on and off to maintain the selected temperature prior to the error message.

The reversing lights have stopped illuminating when reverse is selected.

The passenger electric seat back works perfectly but the base/squab wont move back or forward and both heated seats when switched on work sometimes but not others.

And finally the heated rear screen when switched on beaps to confirm you have switched it on but nothing happens at the rear window.

The engine management light has come on again, it had a new CAT and lambda sensor when it last came on which rectified the problem until now, the garage have put it on a diagnostic and it spat out approx 18 inches of print out

Like I mentioned the garage that normally services the car and repairs any faults has said they think it needs a complete new dash quoting £500 for the part plus fitting but cant tell me how long that will take, any ideas? also would it be possible to source and fit a good second hand unit? Or is it something more simple like a control box rather than a full dash?

Obviously I need to get it repaired as the MOT is due at the end of October and it won't pass with the internal light/indicator faults.

Many thanks in advance and all ideas are greatly received.

Matt

That is an awful lot of faults and many of them not related.

The usual suggestion, is to check the plenum for water - that is the sections between the double bulkheads, under the bonnet/ just below the windscreen. That is where the ECU lives and sometimes gets flooded, causing all sorts of strange faults.

Another idea would be to try a battery off reset, disconnect the battery for 30minutes, then reconnect. Have your radio code to hand, unless it is a Hi-Line.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Check your spare wheel well for water ingress, and try unplugging your sat nav.
K-Bus fault is the most likely cause

HiLine is the built in TV and sat nav, see here.

I have to agree with HarryM1BYT, the fact that all the faults appeared at the same time need to check your plenum ASAP. Excellent how to here. Water hitting the ECU will cause all kind of electrical problems and, worst case scenario, kill the ECU.

Highly unlikely as the OP has a petrol
More likely the nav drive or TV tuner module in his case

Hi guys

And thanks for the advice being new to this model all these little gems are priceless.

I have been out and followed the excellent guide and cleaned the Plenum lots of desiccated leaves but no water, removed the pollen filter and cleaned that too and its as dry as a bone.

I also tried disconnecting the battery for 30 mins as advised to no avail but all the messages it now displays ie low fuel is in French, having now gone back through the considerable history file and knowing the previous owner it spent most of its life in the South of France and has at some point had a French/ European K-Bus fitted hence my French messages, would this make a difference to a UK supplied spec car? (Stabbing in the dark I know but worth a thought)

I cannot seem to locate the retrieval pins required to remove the sat-nav drive so will track some down and try disconnecting it prior to spending a considerable amount letting the garage route around with the wiring.

Any further suggestion gratefully received

Matt,

You can do the fault-finding yourself. Brian has said that he expects a K-bus fault here:

So, unplug the sat. nav. drive (waiting for the red LED to extinguish first) and see if the faults clear. If not, do the same with the video (TV tuner) module. If no luck, report back.

Whatever you do, don't let the garage replace the dash.

Simon

Hi Simon

Do I need any special tools to be able to unplug the sat nav drive? or can it be accessed from behind the the carpet surround as if you where changing a rear light bulb?

Also where is the TV receiver module located please?

Thanks
Matt
