2.5 Auto Petrol Consumption

My recently purchased 75 2.5 Club SE Auto is everything I expected, (wonderful !!), except for one thing, the petrol consumption, which is markedly worse than the Mazda Xedos 9 I used to have. This latter was also a 2.5 litre V6 with a 4-speed auto transmission, but was much better on fuel. The engine is the same as the Ford Probe, I believe.

What sort of consumption is normal for a 7-days a week car ?

1. Work Mon-Fri 3 miles away
2. Around town (Crewe) 10-15 miles at weekend
3. Odd longer trip (50 miles or more about once per week)

The long trip I made this last few days saw 200 miles on half a tank coming back from my parents in Christchurch, cruising around 75-80 on dual carriageway/motorway. This is better than the Mazda.

My conclusion is that its poorer in town, but better on the distance runs compared to the Mazda. Trouble is I do a lot of short distance runs !!

3 mile trips! hardly warmed up, bet it is only doing 20 mpg if that on those kind of trips

My cdt gets knocked down to the mid thirties doing a similar Journey to Nursery school.

Yup long runs will give you a fair mpg but around town with a KV6 will always be felt in the wallet. Never mind, it's a great car

Unfortunately I have realised a 75 (even my cdt) isn't very economic around town...

MPG figures! Ahh big subject close to my heart
They are all to do with the way you drive round town also.
For instance how are you starting off from road junctions and roundabouts?

I went on a test drive recently with a chap who complained of poor MPG.
He had 2 settings for his throttle.....ON & OFF

and then really heavy breaking.

Also friends of mine have a CDTi with MPG message centre. Now HE gets 48 MPG on long moterway run...... His wife bless her gets 40mpg on the same long run. Why you ask, because while she's yapping away (never stops) she's on and off the throttle and all the passengers heads are nodding backwards and forwards (bet you know a driver like this:lol: )

My father always taught me to imagine you have a raw egg between your right foot and the gas peddle!! He also had one of those vacuum gauges fitted to inlet manifold on his triumph 1300 FWD! Remember those? And you had to try and keep the needle in the green.ie gradual acceleration.

So if you're getting good 0-60's as per the book your MPG is going to be in the lower figures or worse, as stated for your model in drivers manual

Of course all the above goes out the window when driving the V8:lol: .....NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- the egg.

I do a 9 mile trip to work, a few deliveries in the local area 2 to 3 mile radius lots of stop starts, then a 9 mile drive home and am struggling to keep it at 25mpg, but then that's from the computer on the car , so it's prob more like 21-22ish really.
