Default Err message on trip display

I had an "err" message appear on my trip readout over the weekend, in fact it has happened twice.
The only problem I have been experiencing is with the number plate light assembly. It is not earthing properly and the garage have agreed to replace the entire plastic assembly on Wednesday.
This earthing problem caused the battery to discharge(to earth I assume) which meant a jump start this morning.
Back to the original question, what does the "errr" mean?
Any help gratefully received.

Do you have a fuel burning heater?
If so, this 'err' display has been associated with a fault in that unit.

Yes, there seems to be a range of possible causes. It's like a firmware glitch.

In my case this only occurs if I turn the ignition key to the start position very quickly. 1 second pause between position 1 and position 2 and it never happens (he says touching wood).

No I don't have a fuel burning heater, but the car is a diesel.
