Default 1.8T Club SE - Seemingly random wipers from key on

Hi All.

Bit of a strange one this - has anyone else seen it?
When you first key on, the wipers will randomly wipe once, then stop - even with the wipers in the off position. Throught out the drive cycle, the wipers will keep randomly doing the odd sweep for no apparent reason.

When the wipers are switched on, everything runs fine, and all speeds work.

A friend of mine with a generic scan tool found that the washer switch is apparently always closed - I imagine this is probably the main culprit, and is confusing the CEM(PJB / BCM or whatever Rover call it) to thinking that it needs to keep clearing the windscreen everynow and then.

Is this likely to be a problem with the actual switch in the stalk? Can anyone else shed any light on it?

Cheers for any help and info chaps,

Paul.

PS - Apologies for the 47 in the title - random typo!!!
