How to check if EGR valve is working
Is there a way to do a manual check to see if the EGR valve of a Diesel is working?
Should I be able to push a plunger? macafee2 |

A mityvac gauge could be used to operate the plunger but not many people will have one in their home tool kit. In some cases you can hear the engine note change slightly when it operates but the easiest way is looking at the maf readings to see a reduction as the egr opens.

Its been a while and my memory isn't what it used to be but here's what I think I did... If you have the egr valve removed and in your hand on the bit that has the diaphragm in it there is a small hole. I took a foot pump with a football inflator, held it over the hole and then pumped the pump. Now I can't remember if that opened the valve or closed it....it won't tell you if it is operating correctly ie at the right time but it will tell you of the valve is moving or not. |

They are vacuum operated, via a solenoid valve.
You might be able to suck on the pipe enough to move the valve to prove it works. If you suck, there should be no leaks from the diaphragm, even if you cannot move it by sucking. A good look at the valve should indicate whether it is closing properly. Putting a finger over the flexible pipe end, with the engine ticking over should prove the solenoid valve is opening.
