Default Auto transmission refill

Does anyone have any recent experience of having their auto transmission fluid drained and replaced including new filter? The gear changes on my Rover 75 are still smooth but after 15 years and 100,000 miles I think perhaps it is time for a service. The problem is getting it done without being ripped off. One auto specialist quoted £180 + VAT and said the filter could not be replaced.

I don't believe the auto box has a filter (or if it does it is not accessible). I had my box refilled by one of the T4 specialists on this forum and it cost me around £50 all in (but I had to get the transmission fluid myself from
Rimmers Bros). Do make sure you read up and get the right fluid as any other fluid will damage the unit!

Edit the fluid is called JF403E and it is available from here: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-VYK000040

If you want to do it yourself (if you are mechanically inclined), there are some brilliant guides of how to do it on this forum, ill be back in a minute and will post a link for you

Your specialist is right as far as servicing the boxes is concerned. The gearbox has to be removed to change the filter.

If I were you Michael I would let sleeping dogs lie or, if you prefer, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

to the club by the way.

Any fluid that is Texaco N402 compatible will do. There are cheaper alternatives than the "official" rover type. There is a list somewhere, but I can't find it

I know CARLUBE ATF-U is compatible, it doesn't mention it on the website but I contacted them directly to find out. They confirmed it does still conform with Texaco N402 specs.

I did mine myself recently. I can understand the "if it ain't broke" point of view, but changing fluid with the correct spec in the correct way will not cause issues.

Mine had done 72K and came out quite dark brown, but not smelling burnt. Changed for the correct spec fluid and fine since (3K+ so far).

I went for the full flush method, otherwise you need to replace at least twice to replace majority of the fluid.

Full flush method here - http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=124816

I heard you should change it every 70K or before (I think it was recommended by either rover or jatco, can't remember which). When the fluid was drained from my box it was distinctly burnt and was changed because it was changing rough, it cured the problem for about six months, now the rough changing is back, but is quite intermittent. I will be taking the car to a specialist for a look see in a months time (as the car isn't been used that much at the moment and don't have the money to deal with it now). Funnily enough as our mechanic found out (rover expert and T4 guy), our car has had the box changed at some point in its life as the metal is so much more shiner than any other bits of metal in the engine bay (he said that it didn't look right). I do wonder if there is something wrong with something else in the transmission chain which is causing strain on the gear box, but something is certainly wrong with it.

@maxxpump - have you checked your gearbox solenoids?
