Default Vista v Windows 10

I have a HP Presario A900 laptop running Vista. Some time ago I had to reload it and decied to put on XP.... would not work. So tried Windows 7 and that did not work either

So my question is... Is this laptop tied to Vista or caould I now update to Windows 10 as this seems to be a different 'platform' ?

Or will the requirements of W10 be too large a demand for the laptop ?

Any comments appreciated....

Windows 10 Specifications and requirements

MS specifications & requirements states:

  • Processor:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC
  • RAM:
1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit
  • Hard disk space:
16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS
  • Graphics card:
DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
  • Display:
    800x600
Hope this helps, from what I can see your laptop should be within requirements shown with a 1.86 CPU, 3Gb memory, 160Mb HDD and better than 1400 display

Thanks for that will need to fire it up on the morrow and see what's in there. I know it's a dual core job, but the actual specs I am unsure of.

My worry was that it would not take any other Windows 'x' besides Vista, and was wondering whether the unit is specific to Vista only

If it offers you a free upgrade you should probably take it. You laptop exceeds the minimum spec for win10 and your current vista installation is slow as hell.

Compaq customised the device IDs in that laptop so that generic drivers wouldn't work and XP could not be installed, win7 would need more power to give any advantage, but win10 is much more efficient as it's a cross platform OS, if it can find drivers it may run well on it. If it can't find drivers you just re-install vista.

Sorry, No Free upgrade for Vista ......

Can I get Windows 10 if I have a device running Windows XP or Windows Vista?

You may purchase Windows 10 from the Microsoft Store or other retailers and install it on your existing device running Windows XP or Windows Vista if your device meets the minimum spec requirements for Windows 10. You will need to back up any existing files before installing Windows 10. It will be a “clean” install.

However, we recommend you experience Windows 10 on a newer device. We think you’ll be happier with the affordable, great PCs that are available today. PCs have improved dramatically since Windows XP was released in 2001 and Windows Vista was released in 2006.

Oh well that blows that out of the water TBH I've never paid for Windows unless it was part & parcel of a new computer purchase (speaking personally)

So no update unless you pay for it, or buy a new computer

PS - and at those prices they will have to put up with me using out-dated Operating systems for the time being

Worth noting that when Microsoft states minimum system requirements it states the minimum hardware required to install windows.
The fact that it may run like a snail once installed is no concern to them once it's been done.

Not completely, you can buy earlier versions at low cost, then you'll qialify for the free upgrade, saving loads of money.

Unlikely I would say - Windows 10 operates much faster then either Windows 7 or 8.1, my own laptop now opens with desktop ready + 18 programs showing on task bar, also ready to open with a single click, in just 32 seconds, now that's fast.
