the last owner told me that when my diesel gauge gets to a quarter of a tank, its nearly empty,is there a way that i can find out if the float in the tank is faulty or its on the clocks

if its the float, are they easy to change

It sounds like the in tank pump is faulty.

The fuel gauge takes outputs from two float/sender units in the tank. Either one may stick, giving a false average result. The pump on the RHS has a float as does the in-tank filter module on the LHS. You can probably determine which is faulty using the IPK diagnostics. The individual float readings will be shown on the screen. You can then open up the correct one. I guess it's possible that the pump has been replaced at some time. Diesel pumps are a regular issue. If so, the attached float may not have been positioned correctly in the tank. Here's a photo of a pump with the float.

Accessing either unit is pretty easy and there are HowTos which will help. You may find these useful.

This was done on a petrol tank, but the principle is the same: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ead.php?t=9108
