That's the general consensus, I'd think. Still waiting for a reply from MG from an email with some pictures of the issue.
I really cant wait too long with this, the independent garage did say that he's seen the same on others cars and as it's an anti perforation warranty wont cover sub chassis and suspension parts..... the usual comment is fair wear and tear.

We used to say yeah and driven by Italians..
Italian (and French) cars were built for a market where cars didn't last more than 4 or 5 years, and if you saw the way they drove them you would understand why
They were battered, abused and then thrown away so cheap basic build was the order of the day. Italian cars used to be famously water soluble, However, that's all changed now.

I think it was a lancia executive that came out with the quote about "excessive build quality" when they were working on a joint project with Saab

Hi.
I was reading two articles in Professional Motor Mechanic (September 2017) about timing chains. It looks as if they are a more common failure than they ever were. The chains are much smaller and thinner to decrease noise but this although materials are better has meant their life is shorter than the old chains of yesteryear.
Oil and contamination seems to be the killer, the correct oil needs to used but even with that today's length and mileage between services is a major factor. Its not just MG but all manufacturers that are having issues, chains are breaking at 70,000 miles, quicker than a timing belt!!!!!
Like I say half the service interval and use the properly specced oil.

An update, MG have yet to reply to three E-mails, next is a letter. The car is getting the corrosion attended to in September though as I feel MG is not interested, it will sadly be the last MG in the family.

You are so right.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure I heard New Balance is moving all production to China, I do hope I'm wrong but if so yet more of our manufacturing is displaced abroad for the directors to get bigger salaries.

Hi,

Look what's happening to Lawrence Automotive who provide trim for Jaguar Land Rover. Historically I think they were part of Jaguar themselves?

I believe they're currently Chinese owned?

A reply came last week, stating that the corrosion warranty is perforation only, there is also a paint warranty but only for poor workmanship or a fault in the paint.
The corrosion has been examined and we have been told its normal wear and tear. I'm far from happy with this but I'm not at this time able to do much to help Emma. She feels what we have already done to slow the process down and some more work next year is the best plan. Sad as she likes the car but doesn't like MG's lack of interest. The thing is, this now seems to be common, a lot of cars are having rust issues on suspension and subframes due to poor painting, so what do you buy if you wish to keep a car for a number of years?

Currently I don't know.

Lexus have a good reputation and the bigger Subaru's like the Legacy are gaining a solid following.

I'm afraid the bean counters have turned cars into "disposable" items with a longevity measured in months not years - they want them to be so much scrap after half a dozen years.

There's been a lot on the news lately about the huge proportion of cars that are sold on PCP deals, which are normally 3 or 4 years long. Speaking with a well known German manufacturer's dealer lately, they said around 90% of sales are now achieved with this type of funding.

Now, with this in mind, manufacturers don't really need underbody components to last longer than maybe 5 years, as once a car has changed hands, they tend to be very reluctant to assist in situations like this, as their perceived liability 'fades' with each new owner, especially if sold on through a non-franchise agent.

But it's not just MG that are cost-cutting on underbody protection - I saw an '06 plate Hyundai Tucson in my local breakers earlier this year, with rust holes in the rear subframe that you could poke your fingers into... Having only done 70-80k (and a diesel), the engine was being removed to send to Poland, whilst the exterior body was near perfect. Yet underneath it looked like it had been parked in the sea...
