It's a very hard thing to have to do but it's the final act of love you are showing for Spud.
He will be with you forever in your memories and in your heart.

I feel for you Thomas and will be thinking of you and your little boy. My absolute best ever friend Elsa was put to sleep after the Cancer got her. I remember her basket bound and getting the phonecall that she was being put to sleep. I drove the two hour car journey to see her for the last time. She got off her bed as soon as she heard my car and came hobbling out into the farm yard to see me. She hadn't moved at all before apparently. I walked with her back to her bed in tears and sat with her and held her for one last time. She just stared giving me a knowing look as if she understood. The next day my mother rang me up when I was at work and I had hoped against hope that the vet had seen her and said, "woo, actually we made a mistake, or she had perked up overnight."
I was standing in the workshop at work in floods of tears, wearing my oily overalls, must have been an odd sight. I cannot think of her to this day without crying and the same thing has happened now. I'm sat here in tears. Thanks for making me think of her though, she was my best mate, my angel and will never ever be forgotten. I know exactly how you feel.
