Default Whats this? Mod or Bodge?

I am new to the V6 variant and have been trying to educate myself ready for a stab at changing the belts. Two things I have spotted the following:

Is this a modificaton or a bodge job, is it indictive of a dodgy inlet manifold? These question may sound daft but the V6 is foreign to me and im trying to fathom it, what is the reason for this?

The 2nd issue is a very slight oil drip, not enough to leave a mark on drive but a small drip on the bottom of the gearbox housing where it mates with the block here:

Poor pic I know, the oil cant be seen as I had just wiped it down , bearing in mind that it is an auto and looks and smells like engine oil instead of transmission fluid. I can only think that it may be the crankshaft oil seal gearbox side leaking into the bell housing, is this likely, common? Any other views on this are welcome. I have no intention of wrestling the autobox off and hope there is another common cause for this leak.
