1. The oil cooler can leak internally or externally. An internal leak you can only see by water loss, and if large by cross contamination.
a small amount of water leaking into the oil will "burn off" and be invisible.
Only if too much will it be visible.
2. The inlet manifold gaskets leak, irrespective of how well they have been fastened. I have yet to see a set of gaskets that have not leaked.
The amount might not be great, but then again it could be. Difficult to tell before you see the gaskets. If you have no deposits on the spark plugs. I would try and by-pass the cooler as a first step.

This is a matter of trial and error. So complete one thing at a time and give it time to play out.

As the coolant sensor was leaking and to deal with it you need to remove the front inlet manifold I decided to remove the inlet chamber and both inlet manifolds. I don't like interfering with the fuel rails so I just take off the connecting pipe at the front manifold it has to be wriggled free and reconnecting will no doubt be a challenge but it will be doable. The inlet gaskets seemed to be perfectly okay, no sign of any leakage so I just sorted out the coolant sensor cleaned it up put on a new gasket and put some 577 Loctite on the threads screwed it back in to the correct torque. Total time so far two and a half hours. The next job is to clean all the mating faces of the manifolds put on new gaskets and put on a thin layer of Hylomar on both sides of the gaskets, reassemble with fresh antifreeze then hope for no leaks.

Do I take it that if the plugs are okay this discounts HGF and if it continues to loose water then it will then point to a faulty oil cooler which looks like a pain to replace.

leaking intake manifold gaskets would likely leave you with shiny clean plugs. HGF, maybe, maybe not, depends on where the breach is. Your next step should be bypassing the oil cooler.

Good, then that is sorted.
Out of curiosity, let's have a picture of the front gasket.
As for the oil cooler just connect the two metal coolant pipes in front. Then the water side of the oil cooler is by-passed, if I remember correctly.

All back together and working fine. The whole job took five and a half hours including about an hour cleaning everything and taking out and cleaning and then putting back the coolant sensor. BTW I used Permetex gasket remover which is brilliant stuff just spray it on leave it for 5-10 minutes and then remove it with a plastic spatular. I am not sure whether or not it is available here but I got some years ago in Canada.

I now have to wait and see if the coolant level drops so going to leave it for about a week. Kaiser I would post photos of the gaskets if i new how, perhaps someone would inform me how to do it from an iPhone?

just to add my 2 cents worth, i did have a similar leak a while back and turned out to be a gasket on one of the small blanking plate on the rear corner of on the rear head. Was a small leak but regular.
As you have had the heads of i guess you would have seen that

Thanks Mike for the response however there must be an easier way to post the photos. In the meantime I will send Kaiser an email with the photos which is much easier.

As an update, the car has covered about 200 miles and the water level is ok which is encouraging so I am keeping my fingers crossed and everything else!

There ARE much easier ways to post pictures!!
just not on this forum, for some inane (silly, foolish, stupid, fatuous, idiotic, absurd, ridiculous, ludicrous, laughable, risible, imbecilic, moronic, cretinous, unintelligent, witless, asinine, pointless, senseless, frivolous, nonsensical, brainless, mindless, thoughtless, vacuous, vapid, empty-headed reason.

so here you have to go through loops and hoops to express yourself better with pictures!

It is a bit like sneaking a political comment through here at the end of May!!
What a glorious month that has turned out to be!

Or a comment about religion, God forbid!

As for pictures, try Tinypic or Imgur, from an increasingly useless memory.

as for people taking offense (or whatever else they wish to take), remember there IS and OFF button, somewhere! as they say USE it or LOOSE it.

If a member pays the tenner for membership they just need to click on the paperclip button above the message text box to attach a picture.

Everyone, please note, the following is meant as humour, nothing but humour. It is NOT a political or religious discussion point.

The end of May actually occurs in June this year.........
on a Friday...........
which is the Muslim holy day!

Cheers,
Glenn
