Default Key only starts when inserted face up???

Hi,
I have noticed that my key only starts the car when I inserted it facing upwards. The engine does not turn over. But the key does advance to the 'start' position as it would normally. The car is a 2.0 petrol 2001.
I only have one key so I cannot test another.
Why would this be? Wear on one side of the key?

I just have symbols.
All that seems to happen is some of the lights go out. But the engine symbol is still lit up.

The pickup should be standard, it is the ECU which receives and then decides whether to accept the code or not which comes from the pickup. You can force the system to not accept the code, by covering the key fob/ the black plastic bit with tin foil.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Default Solved

Reviving this thread for reference...

I found what the problem was.
The previous owner had coated the battery terminals with either too much or the wrong kind of grease. Wiped it all off and the key turns the engine over every time now.
