surely they can't ban them completely Andy. all those classic cars around the country would become obsolete and useless.

If you have a well maintained diesel, then great. But, he is right in the there are many diesel cars on our roads that belch out smoke like a Russian locomotive.

I drive a diesel - but I also see a lot of diesels that display the characteristics which he observed.

Why do the diesel proponents so often appear to have something to prove?

The problem is probably the way it was put People driving the cars they can afford isn't a 'problem' it's just what they have to do because it's what they have. I have owned 4 diesel cars and non of them emitted smoke from the exhaust but maybe that's because I like and understand cars, many people don't. There was also an unneeded amount of smugness displayed by someone who drives a car many uneducated people would view as an old banger

With all the taxes that will eventually head our way, that could be the case mate!

I think you hit the nail on the head here. With the recent 'discussions' with v8s, I think someone was wanting to be able to join in but felt inadequate with only 6 cylinders just a thought after reading the headline of my daily mail pull out and keep supplement on amateur internet psychology.

That's a fair point and one with which I agree. But, many of the diesels that emit large amounts of smoke do not look particularly cheap to buy or run. I took a video recently of a VW SUV that I happened to be driving behind on the A406. The amount of smoke coming out was shocking.

I have to confess that I try hard not to feel inadequate when driving my CDT, but it is hard.

I have to constantly remind myself of how popular I am with the opposite sex and of course my universal popularity with the membership here in order to drive around with a degree of visible confidence.

Now, it's different when I am in my V6 Omega. I feel like I'm driving a chariot pulled by a large number of stallions.

It was the perceived 'smug factor' of the statement in the OP despite the fact that if the OP was actually concerned with the environment and not just their own sensibilities they wouldn't choose to be driving the car that they are. (yes: the OP comes across as a Hypocrite)

Malfunctioning or badly maintained diesel engines tend to be a lot more obvious to observer than malfunctioning or badly maintained petrol engines. It doesn't mean that petrol engines are any better maintained than diesel.

The 'penny pinching' part was also rather smug - and taken as a derogatory comment aimed at anyone choosing to drive a diesel engined car. neither was the OP clear until clarified what was meant by 'dirty'.
