Hi All,

Looking for help valuing my mum's 2001 2.0 CDT Connoisseur SE Auto please.

It's a 51 plate, 3 Owners from new. It was a demonstrator, so the first owner was the main dealer. My parents bought it and when my dad died, we transferred it to my mum. Superguarded from new. Garaged overnight. 82k miles. Light Blue (Wedgewood?)

Gearbox went a few years ago. After taking advice from here, managed to source a newer model gearbox as recommended. Got it fitted and it's been fine since.

Someone pulled out into my mum when she was driving around a car park. Dented the wing and tore the front bumber off. Managed to put the bumper back, and it's passed an MOT since so not too much damage. However, as expected the insurance want to write it off.

Offered £2,103 as a write off. £1,493 and we can keep the car. Both subject to loss of excess. I can challenge this, but need evidence for the insurance company.

I'm going to look for similar for sale, but guessing may be difficult to find comparables. Thought I'd ask you experts what you think would be a fair value on it.

Gut feeling anyone? TIA.

Insurance companies tend to write everything off these days. The damage doesn't sound too bad and if it passed an MOT since the bump then it's obviously safe to use and drive.

Wedgewood Blue is a common colour so getting a second hand bumper & wing and fitting them (either yourself or a garage) would be the best bet. There are two shades of Wedgewood Blue so check the paint code on your car with the code on the donor car.

As for value its a top of the range model with low mileage (for a diesel Rover 75 82K is hardly run in). It's also a 2001 car so likely to not have suffered too much from project drive equipment deletions.

It's hard to value any car without seeing it.

What colour is the interior?

Don't let the insurance company scrap it whatever you do.

It's black leather interior. Thanks for the info on the paint code. Wasn't aware there are 2 shades. I was planning to attach photos, but got to host them somewhere it seems? I'll try if they will help?

Yes, I think we'll be keeping the car, just trying to ensure we get a fair value back to cover repairs etc.

I think its only worth what someone will pay for it.
This month's "Classics world" (p115) lists an auction of a 2003 model, 2.0 KV6, 68k miles, two owners, sold for £510.00 !

Hello Huw,

The insurance industry uses the trade-in value and if that is less than the cost of repairs (usually judged by the manufacturer's full retail price for parts) then "writing off" follows. So what we club members think doesn't enter into it and retail values are unfortunately irrelevant.

£1,493 less the excess sounds pretty good to me as the damage doesn't sound serious.

Thanks, but that's not what the insurance company said. They told me to get evidence via similar cars for sale on the web.

I'll be doing that, but thought I'd ask in case you guys had any thoughts.

Is there a claim against the other driver?
