Morning Phil and thanks for the list.

Let's begin by settling the question of fan operation. When you start the engine from cold and press the windscreen demist button, does the radiator fan start running?

Good, so that means that there's nothing wrong with the fan.

Next question:
Are the coolant temperatures you've quoted from the car's built-in instrument pack diagnostics which you've activated by pressing the odometer reset button?

The readings are from the torque app, no reason to disbelieve them, they come from the engine ECM and the accompanying smell from the front grill corroberates an overheat.

Also, the slow speeds on the fan dont appear to work?

Or am I misreading this?

Well I think that we should obtain a second opinion. Could you from now on use the built-in instrument pack diagnostics please Phil. Let's see if it corroborates the 'Torque app'.

Yes they do. When the 'windscreen demist' button is pressed from a cold start, the fan is triggered at slow speed. You confirmed that this was happening when I asked you earlier today.

The slow speeds aren't operating according to the readings from your 'Torque app' which is why we need to see what happens when you use the IPK diagnostics instead.

I assumed it was the high speed running on the fan as it seemed pretty loud, is there a way of checking the fan speed?

I'll dig out the instructions for the onboard diagnostics and run it up again tomorrow.

You said that you don't have a resistor and so we're working on the basis that you have a 3 speed fan.
On a 3 speed system the air conditioning triggers the fan to run at slow speed continuously. It increases to medium speed in very hot conditions. It never invokes high speed.

Yes. Use the windscreen demist button to check the slow speed. You've already done that and it works. The medium speed can be checked by shorting two of the terminals on the trinary switch. If the slow speed works then it's very likely that the medium speed will too. There's no easy way to check the high speed.

But as I've said Phil, I see no evidence that your fan is at fault. I do need to verify your 'Torque app' readings though.

If you've got Toaf you can activate each speed in turn and a sliding bar gives you control of how fast you want each speed to run at.

Toaf is free (donation based) software that any of us can run on Windows based computers. Perhaps time to try it.

Hi Simon,

Been tied up for a while.

Ran up the car tonight in diagnostic mode.

The torque app temperature matches the diagnostic screen temperature, it updates within a half second of the diagnostic screen updating and matches the temperature.

One thing, I haven't run the car fir a couple of days, when I opened the bonnet tonight, there was a pool of cooling fluid on the reservoir.

It had lost around 3/4 litre of coolant.

Could this be as simple as a dodgy cap?

Phil
