'Back Up' files......
As I seem to have about 17 Trillion of these of my hard drive, as they are only 'back up' files, can they be safely deleted? If not, why not?

Most programs can have the Auto Backup facility disabled Coreldraw a perfect example with the size of a lot of the things you are likely to do on there.
If the Back Ups are "program" rather than operating system then you should be fine to delete. Ensure that you have got either the Original file/Photo/Drawing etc before deleting. If it is in Windows Dir. or System. Dir best to leave those alone. |

Also, within XP, show hidden files and you can delete all the crud taken up by windows update installs. This can sometimes run into 1-2Gb of space on some machines!
They are recognised by $uninstall in blue writing. Dont delete the first one though $nft (in black writing) as this is used by WU. Location C:\Windows Also in there, delete all entries from the prefetch folder. This will refresh with your most recently used programs but often gets clogged and slows things down. |
