I prefer the ease of cleaning the Meteors offer but being a 17" wheel and knowing what my 17" Serpents tyre sound like compared to the snaller whhels I prefer the ride and sound levels offered by the Unions
Best comprimise is therefore the 16" 7 spokes wheels as above which I also have! |

Noise is a very personal thing neither of my ZTs were particualarly annoying with 18" wheels on but otoh the engines were making the right noises to drown it all out
My 75 CDT is very different though originally it had Crowns and 15" wheels I bought the 16" Seven spokes from Ebay with brand new tyres on them for £190 and I used them quite a bit at first. I did not notice any increase in noise. Now I have the Serpents I only use the 16" wheels in the winter as they are so much easier to clean. As soon as I fitted the Serpents I noticed three things 1, A slightly firmer ride 2, Slightly more grip or less roll depending on your point of view 3, A lot more tyre roar from road noise, especially on concrete. I have since had two different brands of tyre on the Serpents and swapped brands from back to front and the car remains noticeably noisier with them fitted, not annoyingly so but I do prefer the quiet of the smaller wheels! I reckon the 15" Y spokes would be smart and quiet and 15" tyres are nice and cheap compared to 17" and 18" ones! |

My Club SE came with 16" Unions but they had been ruined by the previous owner kerbing them and then trying to cover it up with silver paint.
I had 17" wheels on my old 75 (BK 299 aftermarket) with lowered suspension, never had a problem with road noise or ride quality but it took all the understeer out of the handling. I love the look of the Serpent Alloys but after the BK 299 didn't want a wheel that was a pig to keep clean so I went for the Meteors. I think they suit the car well IMHO.

I've got Meteors on my facelift and they look great. I think they suit the facelift more than previous models. Our other car has unions, which I must admit now look a bit boring. I concur with the comments about road noise, the union equipped car has less. However, what are we comparing against? Both Rover's are quiet compared to so many other cars. Where can I see a photo of the serpent? I don't know which wheel that is. |

Forget that last request - I only had to look! Not my favourite style I must say, but I can appreciate the design.

I think both look fine, however I think my platinum Maniks look pukka. Added bonus is that they are so easy to clean.....
I am in the process of refurbing my Unions, they will be for sale soon, club member will have first refusal as I think they would be looked after... I have noticed a slight increase in road noise, but the roads around here aren't in the best of conditions. But handling is much better.... |

Star Spokes Forever:)
I would just like to throw a spanner in the works and vote for Star Spokes!
They are a 17 inch but with a "medium profile" 215 50 17W. So you get the best of several worlds: The looks! Medium comfort Medium handling Medium priced tyres Very easy to clean So in essence, a compromise between the 15" 16 and 18 wheel choices. There is no accounting for taste as they say IMHO My 1st choice then is the 17" Star 2nd choice are the Serpents As fitted to the Contemporary
