time to ban these.
The huge fire in the west midlands was started by these chinese lanterns.
They have been known to set alight the roofs of houses also. |

Could not agree more!
We had one land our connifers a couple of years ago. Luckily we were all sitting in the garden having a family BBQ for my birthday. Had no idea what we were looking at to begin with but soon stopped and problems with a bucket of water from the pond. Damn things are so cheap and are in every pound shop round here. a mate of mine will be one of the poor sods called out to that fire in Smethwick.

These lanterns can be magical. Writing a message to a deceased love one on it and releasing it to the heavens, or well wishes to newly weds...
They aren't being released by irresponsible yobs, but people just aren't aware of the risks. £6M of damage at Smethwick, not to mention the untold risk to life. Cattle die all the time from eating the wire, if they fall in a field that is cut and turned to silage then the wire isn't seen and it is fatal. These things can travel for 30 miles! I think they should be sold with much shorter fuses and people made aware of the risks, making it a requirement to retrieve them too.
