The mechanic who resurrected my 75 said that no sign of water loss, prior to HGF, was not uncommon.

They showed me the blown gasket, what a pants effort! The 75/ZT is a fantastic, well built bit of kit, but that gasket is flippen awful

Is there anyway of knowing (without taking it apart of course) if an uprated gasket is in your car?

what i mean by this is when were the better gaskets fitted since the 1.8 K series as it has been available since the launch in 1999?

My car was registered in March 2001 and am hoping it's got something abit better than a slimey elastic bit of rubber sealing it!

I think that all were fitted with the slimey bit of elastic (very well described). As far as I know the upgraded gasket was never fitted to the K series until the Chinese reintroduced the MGTF (engine now renamed).

Arrrrrrrghhhhhhh!
then

I will be having to keep an even closer eye on the coolant
it doesn't help that i can smell it either!

Luckily I have put a 2 year warranty on the car so if it does go atleast most of the cost will be covered!

So, the question is, how prevalent are these failures?

Also, if it so likely why not change the gasket to the MLS type (I am assuming this tends not to fail) as soon as you can? Why not treat the gasket like a cambelt and fit the upgraded one before the failure occurs? Of course, maybe this is something many have done already.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Best thing would be to buy a good warranty like i did for peace of mind
mine covers claims to £1000 plus with only a £25 excess per claim
it cost me around £325 from warrantyworks who were recommended on this forum

I think that the MLS gasket is actually the third generation . A previous "improvement" version was introduced when the plastic dowels were changed for steel . It had a thicker bead of slime !!!!

Fingers crossed for you. The 1.8 is great value for money, just put a bit of what you saved aside, compared to the price of a diesel, in case the worst happens Don't let it spoil your enjoyment of the car, if the coolant level does start to drop and you can not find any leeks or there are any signs of 'mayo' on your dip stick, get the gasket changed. There are mobile mechanics who fit them as well as garages. Phone around and get prices first.

Yes I think you are right as i read somewhere that Landrover developed it due to the amount of freelanders with HGF coming back to them within 1 - 2 years.

I will make sure that full kit is fitted to mine if my possible elastic slime gives in
