ZTT190 Water pump failure
Hi after a nice weekend in somerset this weekend,i were driving along at about 65 when the temp guage shot up to hot and the light came on,and the heater went cold i pulled in to a garage forcourt, and there was masses of steam and a jet coming from area of the water pump, also the timing belt cover was now pushing hard up against the auxilary belt, The AA chap said looks like the pump bearing has gone or the pump shaft could have sheared allowing the water pump pulley to be pushing against the cover,i had previousley noticed small patches of water underneath the car (timing side)so could it be a water pump failure?,my worry now is could it have done any further damage to the engine, there is no oil in the water,or water in the oil,has anyone else had the same thing happen to them.any help would be great.any idea of the cost,i love the car but could the cost of repair outway the value of the car.
many thanks Dave. Last edited by horsham dave; 9th December 2013 at 10:18.. |

If the pump shaft has gone, don't run the engine before the whole area of belts has nbeen looked at.

What mileage has the water pump done? It should not cost a fortune to fix.
Others have had a complete cambelt change for around £350 which is similar labour. Ed. |

It all depends. If the waterpump has come to pieces but the piece has been prevented from totally leaving the pump, by the plastic cover, then you might get away with no engine damage.
That selfsame thing happened to our 1.8T, but I thought I was extremely lucky, you might be too! |
