A friends Vauxhall diesel with a DPF cost well over £2000 to put right. He was not a happy bunny!

Only a politician could come up with a system that catches all the soot, then throws in a load of fuel and blows it all out when it's full.

The garage told me to drive up and down the motorway at 70mph in third gear so that the high revs would clean out the filter. Done his for an hour, no change. The garage wanted £1000 + to fit a new filter.

A lot of diesel buyers are not aware of this problem. All of a sudden, petrol are a good buy.

The way I read into this new legislation is that it's a visual check just to make sure it's still there.

I'd be inclined to say if the innards have been 'carefully' knocked out then it shouldn't fail because it still appears to be there. However if you've had the Dpf totally removed and a pipe welded in place I'd be hunting the scrappers for another one sharpish.

A DPF is a bit of smoke and mirrors trickery if you ask me. They "catch" soot particles when driving around normally but then **** them out of the exhaust when revving up more, say on the motorway or that fast road in the country.

Hi, that sounds like Selective Catalyst Reduction; a solution containing urea* is injected in the exhaust system to reduce Nitrous Oxide emissions. Some engines use this and Exhaust Gas Recirculation to reduce harmful emissions... *AKA Adblue

It's not like a catalytic convertor unfortunately, the temperature and pressure inside the dpf is measured and if incorrect will put the check engine light on which is also a fail making it almost impossible to remove the insides without having the ecu remapped to ignore it. The biggest dpf issue is small cars that are just used around town, cars need to be run over a distance to get them to regenerate at a pre set speed, drop below the speed once the regen has started and it will fail to complete. Manufacturers are starting to change the regeneration protocols so that they regen at a slower speed.

That signals the gradual death of modern diesels the huge demand for non dpf equipped ones thus R75/zits increase in price etc etc
