Default Door Inner Mechanism Query

Hi All,
Attached to the outer door handle there is an internal dog-legged bar that is threaded on the end (Pic 1)

It looks like it should connect to the green plastic connector that is fixed to the door locking mechanism (Pic 2) so that when you operate the external handle it releases the door lock.

Is that right and if so how do you connect the dog-legged/threaded bar to the green connector when you have the door locking mechanism fitted to the door already please?
