No offence taken, I had assumed that the pad wear indicator worked like it did on my late 80s Volvo 740... and I'm happy to learn from those more informed.

You should not have to "fight" a high idle speed using the brakes. That is a potentially dangerous situation which could result in a collision. As vitesse has advised, consider the idle speed control valve repair kit or a faulty stepper motor.

According to RAVE the maximum idle speed for a KV6 with automatic transmission is 1100 rpm up to a coolant temperature of 30˚C.

Managed to have a look at the brake pads with a home-made depth indicator (piece of cardboard with some lines drawn across). Looks to be greater than 7mm all around. So the warning light may be the consequence of a broken sensor.
