Default KV6 - Engine turns over but does not fire.

Hello all,

I have just been scouring the forums for possible clues and answers as to the fault my car has developed.

Up until this Friday the car has been running fine. I drove the 132km home from the airport without fault and parked my car under its car port until Saturday morning.

Saturday morning the car would not start. The engine turns over but is definitely not firing.

I have read on the forums a good starting place to identify the cause is the Crankshaft Sensor. No signal apparently means no fuel being fed, no spark or both?

Camshaft sensor would affect the running (Starting/stopping) etc?

ECU area is dry, what cables and connections i can see under the bonnet all look to be in good order.

Ive had this car over 10 years and i know very few parts have had to be replaced. Is this a good area to start?

Any other advice where to look etc would be much appreciated.

Do you have sufficient fuel pressure at the inlet manifold? There is a Schrader type valve next to the throttle body for checking the pressure.

Perhaps the fuel filter inside the tank has backed off ? the filter housing is found at the left hand side under the rear seat.

Search "FFS" and "orange clip" TBH a self tapping screw works just as well if you are stuck.

Lubricate the thin section o-ring upon reassembly as it can extrude if fitted dry. Do be tempted to just nip it back up as the o-ring will be dry. Take it apart and lubricate the o-ring.

Hi Lovel, I did read on here (a good while ago) that not all models are affected by the fuel filter issue. I believe mine fell into the "Not Affected" category.

Are all models possibly at risk?

If i have fuel pressure at the inlet manifold does that preclude the Crank sensor from being faulty?

Many thanks

If the car ran then the crankshaft sensor was ok, the camshaft sensor however is only use during startup on the kv6 and thus could have given out while driving.

First check, test for spark, then fuel pressure

Okay then, just checked the Camshaft sensor, old but not too grimy. All cleaned and replaced.

Checked for a spark on turnover and there is no spark. Camshaft sensor possibly? If so, best place/person to buy a replacement?

Remove the crank sensor, it will be a bmw part and will have the part number on it, it should be easier for you to source one then

This is getting a little confusing - Crank or Camshaft sensor? Will one or both prevent a spark at start up. Zefrench recommended the Camshaft sensor.

If your engine turns over but wont fire from cold it'll be the crankshaft sensor.

Correct I see yours is 1999 ; the affected models are late 2001 onwards
( ish ) due to a different filter cartridge .

And confirmed by the lack of movement from the rev counter while cranking.
