New Clutch Kit - Origional or Aftermarket?
I've finally had enough of topping up the clutch on my cdti, and am going to bite the bullet. A local garage over here in Galway Ireland quoted me 350 Euro for the part & 350 labour just for the slave cylinder , so I'm going to buy a kit myself. The master cylinder is leaking a bit, but I don't think it's enough to account for all the missing clutch fluid, and lumps of grey sludgy grease has been coming out when I bleed it, so without yet crawling under the car, I guess it needs master and slave, and may as well do the clutch plate as well after 55,000miles.
After a quick browse on ebay it looks like a genuine x part clutch is £50 or 60 more than after-market ones. Does anyone know if it's worth the extra, or are there any particular brands (or ebay sellers) to avoid? Anyone know any better deals than something like this kit with a CIS clutch from ecp for £270 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CLUTCH-KIT-ROV...item20af7afa65 Postage to Ireland would probably mean that it's not worth getting the parts individually from various suppliers. And finally, this is a real long shot I guess, but can anyone recommend a garage to do the work around Galway? |

have a look at this. I just had my clutch done for about £320 all in inc oil, clutch, slave, labour. Buy the parts and negotiate cheap labour at a local garage. Should be 4-5 hours and I managed to get it for £175 labour (but my mate did it who works in a well know garages) so save even £250 plus parts @ £130 that's £380. |

You could also try www.buypartsby.com. I bought my clutch and slave cylinder from them. The clutch was AP (same as OEM).

If you're feeling brave then check out Jamie's thread when he did his own clutch on his CDTi a couple of years back ---> http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ad.php?t=18467

It crossed my mind that there was an unneeded coma there between the 'slave' and 'labour' at that price to .
Kfieldin - thanks for the link. It works out about the same price for the kit, but with all LUK badged parts, which looks like a good bet afaik. That got me to thinking, is there any difference in the quality with the different badged hydraulic cylinders, or do they all come from the same source? or has anyone ever messed about with trying to beef up the seal in some way on the slave cylinder? Simon - Thanks for the link - a top notch informative thread! I'm in 2 minds about doing it myself atm. I'd rather the satisfaction of doing it myself. It's new ground for me, but I have the tools, and a fair bit of m/bike tinkering under my belt over the years. My drive is on an incline though, and not the best quality. If I cut down part of the front hedge there is a beautiful bit of flat foundation I might be able to fit onto.. Luckily for me atm money isn't too much of an issue (and it's ffing cold here atm), so it depends on weather I can find a mechanic that I trust and who isn't taking the financial ****. Thanks again for the help everyone. |
