Gearboxes usually last well on these cars and are pretty tough. Gear selection issues are normally down to a clutch issue, lack of oil in gearbox or damaged/misplaced selector cables. I suggest:

- check gearbox oil level
- check gear selector cables are correctly in place.
- check clutch hydraulics - i.e.: check fluid level in mater cylinder, look for leaks in the system (master, quick-fit connector, slave/bellhousing), and possibly bleed the system through.

Do these things before forking out on a new clutch. You should not need a new gearbox or DMF - ignore what the garage tells you. Best clutch kits are from LUK or Borg and Beck with either a Tazu metal salve cylinder or LUK slave. If the problem is with the master cylinder, than either a Tazu metal master or a genuine OE spec Rover pre-filled master cylinder are your best options.

Keep us posted

Is that supply and fit second hand gearbox, including new clutch, if so wanted add onsite here might be much cheaper option.

Stephen

This is ridiculous - on what grounds did the garage justify that you need a new gearbox ? A clutch change with good parts should not cost more than 500-600 pounds, and if you add in a good second-hand gearbox at 100-150 pounds, you should not be paying more than 700-750 pounds in total. The gearbox has to come off to change the clutch, so swapping the box does not add labour cost. Perhaps you need to find a better garage. Try asking Mat at DMGRS for a recommendation - I think he is not far from you, and has a garage that does clutches for him.

Did they check the items on my 'check list', before they quoted for a new clutch/gearbox ?
