Hi guys just spoke to the guy that sold me it and he said he didn't really notice anything and what could I say to that as tbh it's partly my fault for not checking the reverse gear enough! And I didn't know what else to say to his response 😔

Whatever, you do don't get the work done from the garage. You're being ripped off by the sounds of it...there will be someone that will be able to help through the club. As said, message Matt and DMGRS and see if he can recommend so,some in the area to help.

If it's only reverse, it sounds like a selector problem. If it was the clutch, you would have issues with all gears. That's what happened to me from experience.

Totally agree Ravinder and even if the clutch is on its way I'm not getting that impression cause it's not hard to change gears going forward tbh so I don't wanna sound thick but would it not be possible to change the gearbox and then it'll be ok changing into reverse?

At risk of being repetitive- do the three checks I mentioned before:

Gearbox oil - gear selector cables - clutch fluid level/leak check/possible bleed.

Then decide if you need to change the clutch/gearbox etc,. Approach the problem in a calm, logical manner !!

Good luck

And, if it is a gear selector problem, it's a relatively straight forward fix for a garage or a mechanic. A little fiddly but a lot better then doing a clutch or gearbox! And a lot cheaper.

Hi guys hey just wanna say again all this help is a god send !! So thank you everyone ☺ right twist in the story lol the chap has contacted me twice saying that it's the gearbox and that his son can repair it and fit for 300+ And with doing the clutch and that £700 but then rings back straightaway that his son was listening to the conversation and that just get gear selector cables and it might just be that!.....now he had the car overnight the night before last night and said to me the gearbox and clutch are broke but now these two aforementioned calls today so confused ain't the word!! And like you eastpete when you sent me those pics it's sounding like one of the gear cables may have come out so just confused as if it is that, then that sounds much better and less expensive which is what I need it to be ☺ wish you guys were here to help as i'm not a hands on guy lol must say this too when I have the air con the car starts hunting and when I was at pk automotive he said that it's to do with clutch as something is knocking against the clutch when the air con is on! Does this make any sense guys?

The quote of £1100 for a second hand gearbox, a new clutch and fitting is from an unknown source and lacks detail so it is difficult to give any meaningful comment except to say that it would be prudent to obtain at least two more quotes for the same scope of work. Reading post 27 you already have a quote of £700 from another supplier.

The labour only quote from PK Automotive of £ 280 plus VAT (rounded to £ 340) to fit a clutch and gearbox supplied by the OP would appear to be reasonable and not an excessive amount for a MG/ROVER specialist and independent garage.

Also think hard about having all the work done versus value of car, you could get a good runner for £1100! I had all my clutch, master cylinder and slave cylinder replaced and it only lasted three pityful years, the clutch system is not the best compared to all the vehicles i have owned.
