My bolts were in pretty good nick. It was the heat shield that had crumbled away and dropped. Just for good measure I put any nut, screw, bolt, washer back on the car with a smear of copper grease. Adds a little protection to the part and makes it easier to remove again if necessary. I’ve just bought a selection of bolts and washers in stainless steel. Over time all the cars will have them fitted.

Where do you stand if the original heat shield is missing but you have some of the heat reflective pads instead?
Has it got to be an original heat shield?

Yet another license to print money, it seems.

Its getting stupid now, isn't it?

Soon it will be as bad as it is in some parts of America, where if your car isn't 100% standard as it left the factory, its 'illegal' .

Even when the changes make no difference to the safety of the vehicle.

I think the problem is that the government doesn't employ real car people/enthusiasts who know their stuff to advise them.

Instead they employ Career pen pushers with zero interest in vehicles and 100% interest in their next 'job promotion' and next years bonus.

To be honest if there’s supposed to be a heat shield there just fix the one that’s there or replace. I know it runs fine without it but why not fix the original?

In my case it was pretty tricky to repair, I guess it would need the studs drilling out and new ones welding in ?

I've done a repair it's no longer rattling about but the original way of holding it up. Any MoT testers now if that's an issue?

I suppose the argument is: Why is the heatshield there in the first place.

I do not understand the various points about heat shields and the MOT. They were designed in by the manufacturer for a reason and were not removed by project drive presumably because they were considered an essential part of the car. It appears that safety could be the only reason for fitting the heat shields.

An "enthusiast" can not possibly have a better understanding of the function of the shields than the engineers who spent hundreds of hours testing the effect of such items when fitted.

Given the price at Rimmers, it is possible to purchase a complete new set for the price of two tankfulls of fuel. So they are not exactly super expensive.

There really is not a bog deal here. The MOT is finally becoming effective in its objectives!

So what about when you’ve fitted twin pipes at the rear? The shield over the rh side one was not fitted in the factory so would it fail the mot?

Spoke to MOT tester this morning when I took to V6 auto in for second auto box fluid change.
Tells me that he is only concerned with heat shields in engine compartment and above cats or dpfs. Would not fail for missing heat shield above rear silencer.
