Default hi to all (newbie ,,,,fan question)

having had an mgf for 3 years i decided it was time for some comfort
i picked up my 51 plate 2.0 cdt on saturday and absolutely love it ,so quiet and comfortable.
i have cleaned the plenum drains after reading the instructions on here (there was water under the ecu).
i have a question regarding the cooling fan, i seem to have the the 3 seconds on 30 seconds off problem so i need to get a new fan motor, but until then i need to use the car,i presume all will be ok so long as i use the air con as little as poss.
so a couple of questions;
1................if the engine gets hot will the fan still kick in ?
2................can i fit the later motor ?
i have read the threads on the problem but i am a little confused

i must say you all seem to be very helpful and a friendly bunch and look forward to taking part in some threads.

Hi and welcome.

If your fan is spinning occasionally then its likely it will still work when the temps rise.

My diesel has had no fan now since August and I've been stuck in some bad traffic jams with no signs of overheating at all.

We (corporate we) are investigating the use of Kenlow fans who now do a kit for the ZTs which are a lot cheaper than trying to source an original part.

i have read so many threads my eyes have gone funny .
i have just read on .org that the fan should come on if its going to overheat but people say it is a cool runing engine and doesnt usualy come on at all.
also the climate control will work when moving ,but not when stationary .
with the weather as cold as it is i guess i have a few months to get a fan sorted although i do so few miles i might just put up with it and just use the climate when its neccasery the thing is ,,if it wasnt for the b......y internet sometimes i wouldnt even know it had a problem .
so long as i can still drive it safely without climate control i can live with it ....i think.
i might have to if the fans arnt available.

thanks
mick

to the Club Mick, much to read and see.
If you have the Diesel, with the Air Con switched on the Fan should run all the time (continuously), if it stops and starts it needs replacing I'm afraid.
A problem also happens with the Resistor mounted behind front Bumper.
Upgrade this regardless with a Kit from a Member on here, Julesbass IMHO.

this sounds to simple but could you not just swap the low and medium speed wires so that the fan runs at medium instead ?
it would seem that it might take a while to source a fan and i just wanted to make sure the fan would come on if needed to cool the engine coolant.

That Part number is for a Motor Cooling System Fan - Air Con from Chassis No: 245554 to No: 324473 so should fit yours, but a good chance only 2 Speed.
Don't throw away your old Control Box, as Julebass would like them for a ongoing Project.

for now i have put a switch accross the trinary switch so that i can bring the fan on at high speed if the need arrises ( stuck in traffic etc) . i have put the switch under the dash on the drivers side.
i sat in traffic for 40 mins last week on the m25 after the truck super prix at brands hatch with no rise in engine temp.
for now all seems well.

thanks all

Thats novel! CDTs never overheat but you could use it if you are stationary in a heat wave as the aircon needs the fan running apart from the fact that when the trinary cuts in I think the compressor stops so that might not work!

Read my howto then buy a Kenlowe
