James May sums up my feelings on private number plates rather beautifully in this article from 2005...

Amusing one not far from where I live was regularly transferred to his newest car, usually the latest Porsche, by the owner every other year. 2 COX.

Not sure I'd give too much credence, whatever he has to say, to Mr. May. Sometimes it just doesn't matter what others think, there is usually a personal aspect to these things.

My reg no has all my initials in the right order and the number following them is the date of the most wonderful day of my life when we were married. I've had it since 1993. It is now valued at 20 times what I paid for it. Much the same principle as the blessed Celia. The marriage licence cost 14/6d in 1964.

Edit: Must say I didn't think that reg no would out-fox the filter. Ho-hum.

Glad you mentioned your surname as I was lost on what the plate meant.

With so many anonymous euro boxes around, I am not surprised that so many folk like to personalise them, and decent ones can be a great investment. I also believe that I read somewhere that fewer cars with personal plates are stolen, or cloned, because they stand out too much. I am, however, amazed at how many are misplaced and yet do not get pulled by the police or at MOT time. All mine are street legal. and would sell for at least what I paid, so I am happy.

I saw this plate on a Ford Focus estate in Derby.

"V1 BRO"

I wonder what they do for a living?

When DVLA first started selling Northern Ireland GAZ plates, I bought GAZ 2011 - the numbers being my birthday.
I paid something silly like £275 for it including the transfer fee.
When I put the bike up for sale that the plate was on, the guy who bought it wanted the bike to take to a rally at the weekend (he came to buy on Thursday), and couldn't wait for me to take the plate off, so I had to let it go with the bike or lose the sale.
Stupidly I let it go, not one of my wisest decisions.
Last time I checked the plate was on a VW van.
