The V8's don't fall into the same classification as the rest of the models. They were somewhat specialized/elitist when they came out and have remained so. I would imagine most are second/special cars owned by people who want that particular car. Because of this comparing them with any other make is pointless. It is also pointless trying to give a definitive value for them. There is a market for them, clearly, so the prices are strong. Most people who collect cars, even if only one besides their daily rides, are in the financial position of being able to indulge their passion. It follows, to me anyway, they will pay what might seem a higher price than they would if they were just looking for a second car for daily use - reliability, purchase price, tax, insurance, maintenance and fuel costs are much more important then. It also follow, as has been said, that the cars are likely to be in above average condition, reasonably low mileage and high spec., and therefore attract top prices.
I don't believe they are, or should be, considered as a purchase on the strength of their 'value/advertised price'. Spec., condition, etc., are far more important and no-one should buy one till they can get the best available, regardless of the asking price. At the end of the day you're buying something that is, or will become, a classic, so they should not be considered against either new cheap cars or different makes of older car. If a 260 is what floats your boat it doesn't matter about how good, different, or worse anything else is and all that is not relevant to the original question. I do think Christians posts have a value as something of a warning to aspirational 260 buyers, i.e., there can be problems and they aren't necessarily perfect in all respects. What doesn't help the thread is keeping on batting these points back and forward between members who can't, or won't, just let the thread move on. The most valuable responses are from past and present owners and the experts on the forum who can give specific information regarding things like spec and colours, for instance. The thread is interesting for the majority of members who have likely joined because they bought one of the more standard models getting a lot of car for a, generally, low price and who have ended up joining us because they have issues that need sorting. It can seem odd, to say the least, that you can buy a mongram, fully specced ZT 190 or Rover 75, for about a quarter of the price. There are a lot more of the standard cars and they are, or have been, sold/bought in the general car market where prices are set according to different criteria from the specialist market the V8's are in. Just my views peeps and although I won't ever be in the market for a V8 (unless I win the lottery) it is interesting to read what current/past owners have to say about them. |

What i do like is that the price paired with the relatively modest performance is keeping them out of the hands of chavs. To many other rare cars have been ruined by that fate.
Anyway its not like i think they are grossly over priced, just a grand or so. They are certainly worth a premium, but not that much.

£30-32k something like that. About the same as the hand built Rover 800 Sterling Coupe, which after 10 years was worth about £1500 max!

Very well, unusually so, artificially well, even compared to equally rare and better regarded more expensive cars.

Volumes about what? I already said why I think the price is so high.
