It's still the fact that somebody is irresponsibly setting a fire and releasing it into the air with not a care about where it will end up and what damage it will do.
If I had the power to ban them, I would. I don't have that power so for the time being I have to put up with them. It's like legalised arson. Somebody could purposely burn a building down and as long as they had hidden a lantern on the property first, they would probably get away with it.

We'd also have to have quite a big team of checkeruppers to make sure the blokes on the roofs were at their posts and also to check they aren't flicking fag-ends all over the place ..... we might need a good few immigrants to fill all the posts at this rate.

Checkeruppers the more the merrier, No need to worry about fag ends as they will of course all have been banned as they may cause a fire..

Get the unemployed on the roof's and the immigrants as checkeruppers.. Works for me..

They could always clean the chimneys on their way up there. Another fire hazard removed.

Very true mate, a blocked lum is a fire hazard just waiting to happen. Best have all chimneys in the land banned..

These lanterns can be magical. Writing a message to a deceased love one on it and releasing it to the heavens, or well wishes to newly weds...

They aren't being released by irresponsible yobs, but people just aren't aware of the risks.

£6M of damage at Smethwick, not to mention the untold risk to life. Cattle die all the time from eating the wire, if they fall in a field that is cut and turned to silage then the wire isn't seen and it is fatal.

These things can travel for 30 miles!

I think they should be sold with much shorter fuses and people made aware of the risks, making it a requirement to retrieve them too.

Replace the candle with a single LED bulb, would be far safer...
