Default windows task manager processes - how many?

just deleting unwanted programmes to try and speed up computer. I had a look in the above, and notice on start up (takes ages) that there are 43 processes running, and in performance.... page file usage 383mb (over half way up the graph).. and physical memory, total 260096... available 32416, cache 69612.
Does any of this sound like I've got a large thing sitting in a corner of the computer doing things it shouldnt be?

AVG8 free runs contstantly, on anything it suggests it should do...

The number of processes running is probably about right - it varies from system to system and the pagefile useage is nothing really. Only worry if your pagefile is 'used up'. It's a reserve for the system memory. Mine is set on 4Gb (the maximum allowable) and I'm on average using about 400meg-1Gig.

When was the last time you defragemented your harddisk? A defrag'd HD will speed up harddisk access times no end.

There was also an acessory by Microsoft to speed up loadtimes by moving all the start-up files into physical access order on the disk (ie move them so they are all lined up one after the other in the order in which the need to be loaded during start up). This can shave a few seconds or more off load up time. I'll see if I can find this program.

I got fed up running scans of this that and the other with no joy, so I've just done a system restore, going to save files etc that I need then reformat and reinstall the lot, be so much easier, plus will probably help no end as it could do with a good clean up!

The virus is probably already in your system restore memory! You may well reinstall it if that's the case..

Nod32 or AVG should find 99% of problems, they are both free downloads.
