Thank you for that advice. I will move the plugs around to see if the symptoms move.

Did you get the compression checked yet?

Concur on possible plug problems. I once had a Granada 2.3 V6 and I changed the plugs...misfire...put the old ones back in and all OK. I guess even a new one has the chance of being duff!

If compression is OK then at least change no. 4 and see what happens.

Leads were on 1,3 and 5 only on early cars I believe. Coils direct fit on 2,4 and 6.

So then, anyone want to suggest opening up the EMS 2000 to see it there is a fried MOSFET on the board?

Hopefully it won’t come down to that, all options open. The compression is being checked out by a local garage who mentioned that it could be an injector. Unfortunately there wasn’t a nearby Rover specialist for the AA to recover too, I wanted to have the car recovered to a specialist, so the car has now gone to a local garage. I don’t have the equipment for a compression test. Every time I have a local garage look at something I am usually disappointed at the service.

As regards the spark plug on 4, I didn’t take it out now I think of it, I was so sure that I had yet another dodgy coil, even though they are all new. I just stuck a new one on.

I am hoping that as the mis- fire was sudden, I.e, whilst at motorway speeds on the M40, that it is something straight forward. You can live in hope!

Thank you all for your advice.

Toby.

It's inexpensive to buy Toby.

I don't know what you mean.

I would, maybe, if I had the foggiest idea about electrickeryonics! EMS 2000 is a TENS machine isn't it? Maybe that's why it's misfiring, muscle cramps!

Just heard back from the garage, confirmed low compression on 4. The rear cylinder head has to come off for inspection, he can’t do it until Next Monday. ☹️. Cam belts were done 30k miles ago. Just my luck!
