Default Retired my Rover V6

Hi about 6 weeks ago I took my 75 V6 off the road. Needs a fair amount of work to keep it a viable daily car and the paint is going quite bad now. Engine runs fine but developed another water leak before laying it up. The car is in dry storage in a relatives garage. I hope it will see the road again in its once former glory, but afraid it wont be anytime soon due to other commitments and priorities. Its been a good old bus for many years but its age is showing now and needs some work.

I now have another newer car (not a Rover)

Primose yellow is a wonderful colour, it's definitely one to stand out as a future classic.

Hello Stephen,

Sorry to hear this and I understand your situation because I effectively laid-up my SD1 for many years. Based on this, my friendly advice is that you should sell your Primrose yellow 75 without delay.

Cars deteriorate rapidly when they're not used, even if in dry storage. New faults will magically appear so that if or when you come back to the Rover in several years' time, the task will be even worse than it is now.

Take a deep breath and let a new owner keep your once "pride and joy" on the road.

PS I'd highly recommend a classic car auction. Anglia and SWVA have the most reasonable fees.

I fully agree with Simon about laid up cars deteriorating, I have a W124 Mercedes 230 Coupe, in exactly this situation, stick to original plan, or cut my losses?

However, why not advertise it here, before the auction route.

It's very desirable to quite a few, I would imagine.

If I'm right, in that the corner of a sunroof is just visible in the second picture, then there are a few of us, who value that quite highly. Particularly as it's design fault (leaking) is well documented, and resolvable.

Hi sorry not selling it, I will keep it turning over and plan on finding someone mobile and local to replace the thermostat housing and replace coolant (again) before the end of the summer.

Yes it has a sunroof, an electric one. It doesn't leak but also doesn't open. Its been like this from about 18 months old when it was purchased from Palmsville Garage in North London, they couldn't seem to rectify it.

The car has done 78,000 with FSH and had new belts at 67,000.

Many people have sold cars that they love but don't use & regretted it from the moment the money changes hands. If keeping it makes you happy then that is the correct course of action. Yes they do deteriorate but everything is do-able & parts can be assembled ready to fit once the time is right.

I sold my immaculate Connie 1.8SE due to a knee injury (it was a manual) and swapped it for my current 2.0 V6 Club. I saw that it failed its last test on what I would consider to be minor issues and it hasn't returned to the road.

"Repair immediately (major defects):

  • Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm ball joint dust cover no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (5.3.4 (b) (ii))
  • Brake lever has insufficient reserve travel (1.1.2 (a))
  • Exhaust carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle exceeds default limits (8.2.1.2 (b))
  • Exhaust carbon monoxide content at idle exceeds manufacturer's specified limits (8.2.1.2 (b))
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):

  • Rear handbrake only just met min requirements
  • Coolant leak ()
  • Nearside Front Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Offside Front Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Nearside Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Offside Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material (1.1.11 (c))
  • Front both anti roll bar bushes slight play
  • Central Front Lower engine mounting to subframe deteriorated "bush"
  • Front exhaust clamp deteriorated
  • Rear exhaust clamp deteriorated"
A vehicle check with DVLA shows



"Vehicle details could not be found"


I hope that the current owner/user hasn't just scrapped it but who knows?
