just leave it in drive and just use the kick down .press throttle quick to floor and the box will change up gears and away you fly .

I keep mine in Drive & use kick down but check the book, I think for really really steep inclines it should be 2 selected, but i went up North drive worked and that was a mountain lol

If it is struggling up hills then get the VIS motors checked. Also the throttle adjustment can make a tremendous difference.

As Mr Edd said, sounds like the throttle cable is a bit loose and the cars not changing quickly enough, if you feel you need too, you can always move the lever manually to a lower gear, or even several gears down, then put it back in drive when you can..

I always change down into 3rd gear manually on steep downhills to save wear on my brakes..

On my non turbo ZX I often had to change down on uphills or the car would slow down, on that car it is necessary to keep the revs between 2.500 and 3.500 or it just doesn't have the power to climb really long steep hills at a reasonable speed.. i.e. 30 mph or more...

The other side of this is that I always use my brakes instead of the gearbox 'cos it's cheaper to replace the pads than have the auto box rebuilt.

I know this makes sense now that brakes are easily able to cope with the heat generated but having changed down for years on steep hills I just can't bring myself to ride the brakes.
I think new drivers are taught to use brakes rather then gears.

You can always stick it in sports mode - it will hold lower gears for longer

I cant make up my mind whether hills are more economical in sports mode (engine runs faster but burns fuel very efficiently) or normal mode (engine runs slower but 'labouring' doesn't burn fuel efficiently at all - in fact half the fuel isn't burned at all)

Dont have mpg gauge on mine
