You need M12 x 1.75 helicoils, with a good 12.5 mm drill bit to drill out the holes (get a decent cobalt drill bit).

The clutch is still good after 2,000 miles, but annoyingly, I now have a gear selector issue inside the box. It sticks or springs out of 3rd gear- the other gears are fine, and I have swapped the gear selector cables, but the issue persists. I have double checked the clutch hydraulics, and all is good, with no leaks and a good pedal that bites near the top. I have spoken to Neal at AllGears, Worksop, who rebuilds Getrag boxes, and he says it sounds like a classical 283 gearbox selector issue. The plastic tips on the selector forks go brittle and crack with age. So, when I am in the mood (not at the moment), I will take the box off and take it up to Worksop to be rebuilt.

Good luck with your clutch change - let us know now you get on.

Pete

Glad you enjoyed reading the thread.

I am too old now to go chasing after bits of paper/certificates etc. - I did enough of that years ago in my full-time job. cars have always been a hobby - when it comes to cars, experience and learning from your mistakes is the best qualification.

I will be in your neck of the woods week after next - we have a cottage in Rhyd, near Porthmadog. We love escaping to North Wales to relax and recharge the batteries.

Cheers

We can hear the steam trains on the Ffestiniog Railway from our cottage. We tend to take our Skoda Yeti to Wales, as it is a bit more practical for taking lots of stuff to the cottage and for getting around the narrow local roads, but is not as smooth or comfortable as the 75 on the journey there along the M6/M54/A5.

Sorry for going off topic, your thread is a good read. This thread along with FrenchMikes how too will hopefully save good cars from the scrap encourage people to have a go. Your point about learning from mistakes is the key, people should have a crack at it. I try to get to Aberdundat Hall caravan park in Prenteg often as I can, if you see a tatty silver tourer flashing at Yetis it may be me.
