What size sock-it did you use?
A dainty size 10 should do just fine!

Tip - if you use black its unseen...

...drat, I've always got an odd sock now after each wash...

If you're keeping the car though why buy cheap ?
Buy cheap buy twice is dearer long term surely ?!!

How about shoving a few metal pan scrubbers up there

Mine had been on for about 18mnths and just had a bit of surface rust on it, so I think it'll last that again no problems, i've had so called full price systems last not much longer, SS would be the way to go if I had the readies at the time.

Shiners now though and he seems quite happy with it

As I said in my post, I'll get a full stainless steel system within a couple of years, now just wasn't the right time

I have some of those exact ones! I'm tempted to try 'putting a sock in it' or scrubber or wire wool. It is very noisy (not complaining, it was cheap!).

Can't do any harm Colin. The fine grade will be denser so in theory ought to be quieter but then again the density might not make any difference. You could always try a couple up one of the pipes. Not tried it on mine yet but I intend doing so as I bought an aftermarket back box a few weeks ago. I'm still trying to decide whether or not I like the extra 'sound'!

I think the pan scouters/wire wool will rust and look awful, or even blow out.

A sock on the other hand doesn't rust...
