I thought I should update how things are going.

I bled the air from the coolant system and have been driving around with the OBD temp. Usual driving it is in the 92/94 area. Drive slower or stop / start, it has got up to 99 and then come back down again. You do feel parts of your anatomy tighten as temps go up and relax as they come down

Heater is blowing cool on the left hand side - so a blocked heater matrix for definite (there is a thread for this).

Also, the cooling water is now dirty (but not milky mayonnaise) so it looks like I have made inroads into the airlock and got circulation going again.

I will do a full drain, flush and refill - probably this week. This will obviously increase the risk of exposing a leak, but thats how it goes.

Do I risk the 400km drive (200 each way) before the coolant flush!

Your temperatures are fine. The 1.8 cooling system is designed to reach 104 degrees before the slow speed of the cooling fan is triggered.

Keep up the good work, it looks as if you're making progress.

Simon.

as simon said ,the cooling sytem seems to be working and the temps are what you would expect to see .mine used to do just that rise up in traffic and fan used to come on at 104c. then it would go down. so to me your system seems to be fine .you say it goes to 99 then goes back down ? ,i take it that when it goes down you are driving along .as in traffic at a stand still it will and should rise ,then at 104 c the fan should cut in and continue to run until the temp is around 96c then cut off again .oh and dont forget that member gerry3 makes the metel tee piece so its good to replace it from the rubbish plastic one .
