Maybe the fuel pumps, try tapping the one in the bonnet next to the battery with a small hammer or wheel spanner. if that works, there's your problem. Sensors next ?

How low is your fuel, if it is a quarter full or less the most likely cause is the in tank fuel pump has gone. Keep tank at least half full until you can replace pump. This assumes you have a mk1 with the 2 pumps, 1 underbonnet and 1 in the fuel tank.

Hope that helps

I had similar problems but the cutting out only occured under load or hard acceleration, there are several things that can cause this problem so I lived with it ( re-starting the car while on the move ) untill I also developed poor hot starting. this pointed more towards the injectors so I had them re-conditioned and both problems sorted.

Would an injector fault like this show up on a T4 test?

Well Phil T4 did a session on mine and it did not show up at all.. So I guess not.. I did my own leak back test to identify it... You can test them in situ with a little trick!!

Same with mine, nothing out of the ordinary on T4 or on a leakback test
