Its about £110-120 for the slave cylinder ,and roughly the same for the master, both have to be replaced, its a sealed unit, wherever you get the job done, get them to replace the clutch pressure and friction plates while the gearbox is out, and also to check the freeplay tolerances on the dual mass flywheel, cos if that's got excess play on it ,it will damage your new clutch,(so I was told anyway). These prices are for a diesel,I just had it done in April, total bill came to £870, don't know what parts prices are like for a petrol engine though.

Did this job myself whilst i was changing the gearbox, you have to remove the front subframe, support the steering rack and i found it easier to remove the hub assembly from the McPherson struts (saved undoing the hub/driveshaft nuts)and removing both driveshafts. I then supported the engine with a trolly jack under the sump and used my engine hoist to support the gearbox as it is a heavy lump . The clutch cost me £200.and the slave cylinder/release bearing cost me £100and roughly two days of my labour.

Aaarggh! Remove the front sub-frame you is joking matey! No need at all! Drive shaft nuts are a doddle...and just rest the gearbox on the un-removed subframe...

I wasn't removing the gearbox to change the clutch but replacing the gearbox due to shot idler bearings, so whilst the box was out i thought that it would be common sense to change the clutch and slave whilst it was out cos i didn't want to be doing that job again for a long while. Sorry if i misled anyone. Does any one know where i can get the thin metal closer plate that is usually sandwiched between teh engine and the box , as mine seems to be missing.

Thanks all for your replies. Sounds expensive but need to get it fixed as its not worth much the way it is I suppose.
Looking for somewhere local to me that can do the job.
Thanks for the offer but Doncaster is a little too far for a car that has no clutch.

Question

Do all 75/ZT's have the fluid reservoir above the clutch pedal?

My ZT does have a very heavy clutch to what I was used to, but the bite point is fine.

Still looking for somwhere local to repair the clutch.
Seen this on ebay....good price but is it okay?
What you recommend and would this fit my rover 75 1.8 petrol 53 plate.
Been told its the slave cylinder thats at fault but is it okay to replace it or do I replace the full clutch too?

Clutch slave and master will all need to be replaced. Anything less is a false economy and will cause mucho inconvenience fairly soon after!
