If you really can't open the rear door, then first try and push it sharply to close it properly, don't dent it.
Then try opening again.

Normally you would have to press the open button twice, and then grab the door on the release pad under the window.
Alternatively press opening twice, and then press the knob at the drivers door post, which should pop open the door, so you just have to lift. (if you have that knob, later cars don't afaIk)

If none of that helps, then there is a mechanical pull string behind the plastic cover holding the emergency triangle on the inside of the 5th door. Pull that as a last resort.

Then in future check that nothing interferes with the lock (rubber seal, dirt, chewing gum etc) and close the door firmly but not violently.

Default tailgate will not open when pressing central locking key

thanks kaiser, but it will not open from using the button by the hazard button inside.
the keyfob for the central locking/alarm will also not unlock the tailgate although it opens the other doors. if i hold the open lock/alarm button in for a few seconds then it unlocks the tailgate.
is this the keyfob not working properly or is there a central locking motor in the boot playing up? but then why does it then open when you hold the button in.
does anyone know if the alarm etc is a rover fitment or is it a bmw alarm/central locking system or is it only the engine / gearbox that are bmw?
help please

The tailgate should lock and unlock with the doors. The facelift models don't have an internal switch to open the tailgate, it's either pressing and holding the unlock button on the keyfob or the switch under the trim of the tailgate, what can happen is that the rubber shroud covering the switch becomes misplaced and jams the switch which then won't work.

I think there is a particular problem with the 5th door.
Can you hear any noise from the door when you activate the remote?

Unfortunately I don't know much about this subject, but it could be the receiver or the actuator, I would guess.

In any case I'm afraid that you might have to go in there and have a look.

When you say it opens the tailgate after a few seconds, is that the window you are talking about?

Is yours a facelift model? Your tailgate sounds like its working correctly to me
One press of the key fob should unlock drivers door only. A 2nd press should unlock the other passenger doors. A press and hold for a couple of seconds should release the tailgate, which it sounds like yours is doing, which is correct. The button next to the hazard lights button should lock/unlock the 4 doors, not the tailgate. Down to the right of the accelerator pedal, under the bonnet release button, there could be another push button that unlocks the tailgate, depending on the year of your car.
Sounds to me like there's nothing wrong
