It is a deferment of the MOT not an extension for six months. IE if your MOT is due in April, and you MOT in Sept. as far as I am aware the new MOT will run 12 months to the following Sept, and each subsequent month until Sept, the MOT's will all run the same. I can confirm this with VOSA if they are working. Normally Sept is busy as it is a peak month for new car sales, plus the six months back dated deferred vehicles needing testing, it will put pressure on garages that have managed to SURVIVE.
That is the million dollar question. Small independents (we are one) will definitely struggle. Without custom there is no income, we still have to pay rent, rates, wages and insurance, a large overhead for many garages and multiply that by six months -it does not bear thinking. If a multinational company like Debenhams can go, (and there will be others) how are small ones going to fare. Those with small business rate relief should get a government grant of £10.000. I wait with baited breath. We can furlough our staff, but they cannot work while furloughed. Try running a garage with only one member of staff.
This pandemic, apart from the fear of catching the virus, is going to cause many of us real financial hardship, whether employed, self- employed or running a small business. We all need to support each other and I would appeal to all who can, not to leave your MOT. Your local garage needs your support now more than ever. It may be a case of use us or lose us. (It would not be good if the MG Rover specialist garages failed).
PS Since I started to write this post have just had confirmation from our local council we have approval for the Government aid grant for small business, so we live to fight on.

I have just booked my MOT slot for 15/4/20 at my local garage, so will be doing my double checking over the weekend

I didn't excited by the Government announcement on this. My aim is still to get the MOTs done on my cars when they are up. My Supra has just run out and once I am less busy at work I will give her the annual fettle, put the cat back on and take her to me local garage for MOT. They are still open and you can social distance. Just putting it off for 6 months means there will be an influx of MOTs for a period and I suspect some less than roadworthy cars which have not been looked at for 18 months

Also helps businesses at this really difficult time.

I took my car in for the mot just before all this happen and she failled. Where i took her is cloesed and l can't get her retseted what to do.

Did it have an MOT when you took it in, and if so for how long? An MOT failure doesn't cancel the old MOT out, so you may stll be OK.

I thought it did nowadays. You could/would in effect be driving a vehicle with a known defect which makes the car roadworthy. I'm not sure what the position is if you have had the defect repaired between failure and existing mot running out

My Rover 45 failed MoT a couple of months ago on some corrosion, with 20 days to run. Checked when I got back home & it was still showing a current valid MoT. Corrected in a few days and it passed with expiry date an anniversary of the old one so it couldn't in my view have been cancelled with the failure. Not sure if a "Dangerous fail" would cancel , mine was a "major" one
