Default Steering gear - maybe?

2003 Rover 75 Auto Cdti. Has developed a fairly gentle knocking on slightly rough roads but no noise on smooth tarmac. My garage checked both front wheels and found there is slight rocking movement on the offside (I'm in Spain so it is the nearside here). They told me that it is a rod connection to the steering gear and were going to replace that but when they called their supplier they were informed the complete steering assembly had to be ordered at cost of €500 for recon. or €1000 new. Been trying to locate a steering assembly schematic but without success. Would be very grateful for any advice.

there dead easy to fit if you have the right tools but you will need your tracking redoing if you change the outer tie rods aswell
